5.4 has shown up on live servers and from what I’ve read, it seems like people are loving it. I was super impressed that Blizzard managed to keep the new Warchief a secret prior to the release of the content. Awesome job Blizz! There are lots of quality of life changes that were made this patch and where the expansion goes from here I don’t know. This is sort of the “end” of the storyline I think, so anything further should be build up for the next expansion pack. What that is and what it will be about is anyone’s guess!
On a personal note, I canceled my subscription to WoW last month and haven’t looked back thus far. I’ve been playing SMITE, which is a 3rd person, over the shoulder MOBA similar to games like League of Legends. It’s Free to Play (but you have to purchase gods to play, 29.99 for all current and future gods) and is a lot of fun. It’s a different feel that an MMO, but if you like battlegrounds/arenas in WoW but hated the tedium of gearing up/leveling through new content, or grinding out new classes to max level, then you might like SMITE. Head over to smitegame.com and check it out. I’ll be adding a subsection for the game here, as well as some forum stubs for it. If you’re looking for something different and enjoy PVP or other MOBAs, you might want to check it out!
5.3 Release Candidate
The World of Warcraft patch 5.3 latest update on the PTR was marked as the release candidate. This patch is a “minor” content patch that will not bring a new raid, but will bring in an enormous amount of PVP changes.
Some of the things that stick out in my mind are:
- Base resilience is being changed from 40% to 65%
- Gear iLevel normalization – PVE items will be normalized down to iLevel 498 when used in instanced PVP
- Resilience mostly removed from gear
- PVP Power and Resilience nerfed 50% on gems
- Healing benefit from PVP power increased, while other things were decreased to bring about a similar leveling of healing
- PVP power will remain on PVP items to make them the more attractive option over PVE gear in PVP
- Conquest point “catch up” will be implemented, allowing new arena participants a change to catch up on their gear via a temporarily increased conquest point cap
- Random battlegrounds will require that you choose a role when queueing (heals vs. DPS)
Now streaming once or twice a week on Twitch
I started streaming a little last night and I think I will continue to do it from time to time. I’m not really doing it to have viewers, because my skill level is clearly far too low for that sort of nonsense. The amount of time I stream will be very spotty because my playtime is very spotty, but if you interested in seeing Jaydot, Romeid, and myself rock on 2v2s or 3v3s a night or two a week, come check it out over at http://www.twitch.tv/esdot
Thank you to Cubicool for letting me know about Open Broadcaster Software (http://obsproject.com/), an open source alternative for streaming. If you’re interested, Twitch provides a decent tutorial on how to link OBS to your twitch account for streaming. The link for that can be found here.
I changed the guild chat server from Ventrilo to Mumble tonight as a test. So far I like it a lot better. The response rate is killer, the sound quality is very high, and it’s able to be customized to allow me to use it as we would Skype for real time chatting during arenas. You can set all the threshold levels for when it picks up your voice, etc. All in all, I’m pretty pleased with it. This isn’t something we’re 100% locked into. Typefrag gives me the ability to convert back to a Ventrilo server or even to a TeamSpeak server for the same price with no additional cost for switching.
Download it here: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/
Try it out and let me know your thoughts!
Well, the first raid tier and PVP season for the Mists of Pandaria expansion has drawn to a close. As a guild we achieved guild level 25 this expansion, have had numerous level 90s, and have done plenty of questing, a few dungeons, some LFR raids, and a bit of PVP. If things pan out, Pete, Mike, and I should receive challenger titles from our 3v3 team, Quack Quack Pato. I’ll add some commentary after the break about my experience this PVP season.
